Gary Neville has expressed his astonishment at how well Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch has performed this season, with the Dutchman emerging as a brilliant number six under manager Arne Slot. The former Manchester United captain revealed on the *Stick To Football* podcast that Gravenberch’s transformation has been the biggest surprise of the campaign, highlighting his unexpected success in a holding midfield role.
“I am going for Gravenberch as the biggest surprise because of how he has played, and in that position,” Neville said, admitting that he didn’t expect the 21-year-old to adapt so quickly to the demands of the number six role. “I don’t think anyone expected him to be this good. They may still go for a holding midfielder, but when you don’t get Martin Zubimendi and end up with Gravenberch playing how he has, it is unbelievable,” he added.
Liverpool were initially pursuing Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi, but after missing out on the Spanish international, Gravenberch has stepped up to fill the void. The midfielder’s performances this season have been nothing short of impressive, solidifying his place in the starting lineup. Ian Wright, also on the podcast, agreed, praising Gravenberch for his impact and stating, “He has come in and locked it off. How much money has he saved Liverpool?”
As well as Gravenberch, Neville and Wright also singled out Nottingham Forest striker Chris Wood and Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap for their surprising performances. Both players have found form in front of goal, with Wood continuing his scoring run and Delap making waves at Ipswich, adding further depth to their respective teams.
Liverpool’s midfield has been a key area of focus this season, and while Gravenberch has exceeded expectations, there is still talk of Liverpool seeking an additional option in the number six role. While Wataru Endo has been a solid addition to the squad, he does not possess the same deep-lying playmaker qualities that Gravenberch has shown. With a long season ahead, adding another viable option in midfield could make a significant difference for Liverpool, particularly in a potential title race.
Having Gravenberch perform at such a high level has alleviated some pressure on Liverpool’s midfield, but the Reds are likely to still pursue further reinforcements in January. The competition for the number six spot would not only help to elevate the squad but also create a more balanced and dynamic midfield unit. With the Reds pushing for a Premier League title, the addition of a fresh face to strengthen their midfield could provide the edge they need to stay competitive at the top.
