Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has admitted that he has been surprised by the level of performances of Mason Mount since making his debut for the club this season. The young midfielder impressed under Lampard at Derby County last term and he has continued the good work by establishing himself at the west London giants.
He told: “The all-round game and quality of Mason. He is the catalyst for us getting in front with his sharpness. He was brilliant for me at Derby. I did not expect this level but he is improving daily. It is great for the club and a long time coming. The work is done in the academy. The mentality is great. They want to play for this club. At the moment they are earning it and setting a level for others. I have complete confidence in the lads. They are there on merit. Whatever game they take it on board and long may it continue.”
Chelsea’s 2-0 triumph over Brighton registered their maiden league win of the season at home and that has helped them to temporarily jump to sixth on the table. They are currently just goal difference behind the Champions League spots and they have the opportunity to break into the top four with winnable games against Southampton and Newcastle United to follow.
Prior to that, however, they have a Champions League group stage encounter against Lille and they need to get something out of the contest. The Blues suffered a 1-0 home defeat to Valencia during the competition’s opener and they now need to make up for the loss with a strong performance on the road.
