Liverpool is gearing up for a highly active summer in the transfer window, with significant changes expected in both incoming and outgoing players.
Since Arne Slot’s appointment as manager last summer, Liverpool’s transfer activity has been relatively minimal, with the Dutchman making just two signings. The first was Federico Chiesa, who arrived as an outfield player, while goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili joined from Valencia. However, the latter was loaned back to Valencia, as he was not deemed necessary as a backup to Alisson at Anfield.
That’s been the extent of Liverpool’s business over the past two windows, with Slot predominantly working with the squad left behind by Jurgen Klopp. But this summer, a shift in strategy is expected, as the club looks to strengthen in several key areas.
With Trent Alexander-Arnold set for a move to Real Madrid, Liverpool is likely to sign a replacement right-back, addressing a crucial gap in their defense. Additionally, a long-term successor for Andy Robertson is also on the agenda, as Liverpool continues its search for a new left-back.
Another priority for the club is reinforcing their attack. With Mohamed Salah carrying much of the goal-scoring load, Liverpool is expected to bring in a new striker to ease the burden on the Egyptian. Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez have struggled to hit top form this season, with the pair combining for only 11 league goals so far. Nunez, in particular, seems poised to depart, with clubs from Saudi Arabia reportedly showing interest in the winter window. The Athletic’s David Ornstein mentioned Nunez as one of six players with uncertain futures at Anfield.
Speaking ahead of Liverpool’s victory against West Ham, Ornstein highlighted the potential summer departures and arrivals: “It’s going to be a really busy summer with recruitment,” he said. “They’re in the mix for Dean Huijsen at Bournemouth, the centre-half. Milos Kerkez, the left-back at Bournemouth. Perhaps a striker with Darwin Nunez expected to leave as well. The uncertainty surrounding Ibrahima Konate, who’s entering the final year of his contract without a breakthrough on terms.”
Other players who could face uncertain futures include Jarell Quansah, Harvey Elliott, Joe Gomez, and even Luis Diaz, who is approaching the final two years of his contract. However, two key figures—Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk—are expected to remain with the club for the foreseeable future, solidifying the backbone of Liverpool’s squad.
There are also expected departures in the form of Wataru Endo and Caoimhin Kelleher. Endo has struggled for regular playing time, while Kelleher has made it clear he is looking for a move to secure a first-choice goalkeeper role elsewhere. The pursuit of a new left-back may also signal the departure of Kostas Tsimikas, who has seen limited action this season with just six league starts.
With the squad potentially undergoing significant changes, it promises to be a busy summer for Liverpool as they seek to strengthen their ranks and prepare for the new season.
